Farewell Shirley

Shirley Whaley, Library & Information Supervisor at Pilgrim Staff Library is taking early retirement at the end of December.

Shirley started as the first Library Assistant on 1st September 1976. She worked with Anne Willis, Librarian, to set up and expand the Pilgrim Hospital Library Service. The Library, consisting of the General Library, a journal room and the Staff Library was housed in 3 rooms on the first floor of the tower block. In 1993 the Staff Library and journals moved to the present home within the Education Centre. The General Library moved to a new purpose built room on the ground floor in 1995. There have been many staff working within the service, but no one else has stayed for 35 years.

Shirley has seen many changes both in staff and services. When she started everything was done manually, there were no e-resources, no internet and no biometric finger prints to issue books.

We have all valued working with Shirley and wish her a long and happy retirement.

Don’t get frustrated trying to obtain journal articles!

Use the library's journal article request service instead; we'll even email articles to you if we can.

If you cannot find the full text of a journal article, ask the library to find it for you. We will source it from other libraries, up to and including the British Library.

If we receive the article as a PDF we will forward it to your NHS email address. If we receive it as a photocopy, we will either post it to your work address or hold it in the library for you to collect.

Contact your local library or request an article via the following website

Take a peek at the new HeLLO website

The library’s HeLLO website is being redesigned. The aim is to make it easier to access services and resources such as eJournals. The design is simpler and introduces new functionality into the site.

The new site is due to launch in September, but for a quick peek at the new design, please visit
http://www.hello.nhs.uk/beta4/default.asp.

It’s not complete, so some menu options will not work, but please tell us what you think about the parts that do. Do you like the design, does it work in your browser, is there something you really don’t like or think we should change or include. Please complete the feedback form at
http://www.hello.nhs.uk/feedback.asp, selecting website from the Is your comment about: section.

Journal renewals – what do you want to see in the library’s collection

It’s journal renewal time. The librarians shortly will need to decide which journals to buy in 2012. We’ll make our decisions based on usage, need, and cost.

Please let us know which journals would best meet your needs and the needs of your department. Contact a librarian, or complete the journal renewal feedback form at
http://www.hello.nhs.uk/journal_review.asp.

As with its sister bulletin,
Patient Services, which covers the latest developments in patient choice, patient experience and improving patient outcomes, it is designed to complement the current strategic direction of ULHT.

NHS Evidence has changed

NHS Evidence is the main evidence portal for the NHS in England. It enables you to search for clinical evidence and links to healthcare databases for more advanced literature searching.

In this new and updated version, an A-Z of topics has replaced the Specialist Collections. Topics group together NICE guidance, evidence, patient information, medicines and current trials related to the topic.

NICE Pathways bring together all related NICE guidance and associated products in a set of interactive topic-based diagrams. Current pathways include:
Alcohol-use disorders; Breast cancer; Chronic heart failure; COPD; Dementia; Depression; Diabetes; Diet; Glaucoma; Stroke; Venous thromboembolism

Searching

Our trained information professionals are expert searchers. They still offer a comprehensive and in-depth literature searching service, but can now also offer you an Evidence Search

An evidence search will include guidelines, evidence-based reviews, policy documents and some primary research, but will not include details of all relevant research published in journals. This type of search is great if you need to revise a guideline or update a pathway.
